It's no secret that the franchise has been riddled with bugs, and despite this every game up until this point had been in my opinion still very enjoyable. The problem I have with Valhalla has nothing to do with the storyline. The game is beautiful. The viking twist, while not a unique concept in itself, is new to the AC series. I really appreciate the addition of an even harder difficulty as I play all RPGs (and I have quite a few under my belt) at the hardest available difficulty. Hot take: The Witcher 2 and AC: Odyssey were both significantly more difficult than Elden Ring in terms of boss fights.The issue I've come to discuss, and the reason for my low rating (the worst AC in my opinion as a result of this bug, and that includes Brotherhood) is the dodge simply not registering. It's not that my dodge stopped working altogether. That probably would have been preferable to my current dilemma. The problem is that the dodge doesn't work *some* of the time. In a boss fight, where every attack is fatal and spamming dodge is out the question due to limited stamina, for roughly 5% of my dodge inputs to simply not register is absolutely out of the question and undeniably game breaking. I'm within the window for the dodge. I literally just played through Elden Ring, finishing it in about 60 hours and doing most of the secret bosses as a reference. I know what I'm talking about when I say the dodge mechanic is actually just inconsistent in Valhalla. 5% might not seem like a lot, but in a boss fight where every attack one taps you and you have to dodge a few dozen times just to get through a potion of the fight, it becomes an RNG fest just to see if you'll make it to the end before the random interval no input received dodge gets you killed. I absolutely hate that this is a thing. The game has been out for some time now, and for this to not have been patched feels like a complete failure on the part of the developers. I refuse to lower the difficulty, so I'll likely spend countless hours trying to slog my way through each boss, dying hundreds of times to a broken mechanic. I like a challenge, so long as it is dependent on my own skill and even a little RNG at times. But this is just disappointing.TL;DR Valhalla is broken because the dodge only works *most* of the time. You'll often be left standing in place like you never pressed the dodge button. You will die a lot if you play on the hardest difficulty solely due to this bug. Valhalla is now my least favorite AC game to date.

Dawn of Ragnarok is the perfect expansion for what the latest trilogy in the Assassin's Creed franchise set out to tell. With a fun new world to explore, new skills and, most importantly, a very well written story that should please longtime fans of the series.

Dawn of Ragnarok marks the end of Assassin's Creed for me. The graphics are still beautiful, and the combat is somewhat challenging, but the story itself and anything that was ever unique in the AC series is just gone. If you long to play as Odin again you might find some interest in it, but I doubt the almost-full-priced expansion you'd end up buying will make it feel worthy. Dawn of Ragnarok is the last straw for me - The assassins need either a brand new leader, possibly not even Ubisoft, or to be left alone.

In terms of scale, this addition was not even close to the Fate of Atlantis from Odyssey. Their attempt to sell this DLC not in a season pass, but separately, citing its scale, also does not stand up to criticism. In terms of scale, this expansion is the same as the previous Siege of Paris DLC. Nothing justifies releasing this expansion on its own rather than in the Season Pass. The plot is frankly weak, throughout the DLC there is only one strong cutscene, but it does not justify a separate sale. And the DLC itself is frankly weak, like Valhalla itself. 6/10.

Dawn of Ragnarök could have given us new items in shops, different resources to gather and craft with (though you can upgrade gear to a new tier, which is a nice addition) and more fun with its economy. And while there are differences to what we’ve already played through in the base game and its other two expansions, they don’t make the experience different enough. That said, however, the story here can’t be faulted, nor the treatment of the sagas and history of the Vikings and Norse myth, which is Dawn of Ragnarök’s best element.

Thanks to its new weapons, excellent characters and nuanced narrative, Dawn Of Ragnarök comes closer than ever before to breaking free of AC Valhalla’s template. Though it can’t entirely escape some over-familiar mission types, Dawn Of Ragnarök does a great job of pulling together several strands from the main game and prior expansions. Svartalfheim and Odin’s quest give AC Valhalla renewed energy and should please both fans and maybe entice some newcomers to dip into the franchise. Dawn Of Ragnarök is a substantial and overall impressive addition to the series.

The first post-season pass DLC is a substantial slab of new plot, gear, and abilities but never anything more than that. If you loved the base game, this is a lot more of exactly the same.

With Dawn of Ragnarok, Ubisoft has finished the Assassin's Creed Valhalla-arc, and it does so with style. Players can explore a huge new world and use new powers, which add a whole new layer to the gameplay. Besides the storyline there is plenty to do in Svartalfheim. The world does feel a bit repetitive at times and the price tag of the DLC is a bit high, but for fans of Valhalla, Dawn of Ragnarok is certainly worth it.

I have no doubt that Dawn of Ragnarok will be enjoyable for some. In truth, however, it only takes a hesitant half-step towards offering a full fantasy experience, and in not committing fully, it ends up being a shallow expansion that does little to justify its price point or its existence. I'm not sure who these Assassin's Creed fans are, the ones clamouring for a full-fledged fantasy RPG, with monsters and lighting boat cosmetics and new skins for their warbird, but clearly, Ubisoft is hoping to capture that market. If anything, Dawn of Ragnarok has made me realise that I'd much rather be fist-fighting the Pope, than taking down a fire demon with eyes made of lava.

Newcomers may feel a little lost to begin with, there's a lot to get your head around here, but fans of Valhalla should be delighted with this deliciously fantastical new addition to the base game.

Eivor steps into the shoes of Odin for a grand stomp around a gorgeously realized fantasy realm in what has become my favorite Assassin's Creed experience of all time. Great writing, gorgeous visuals, and a ridiculous amount of content make this DLC worthy of being a stand alone game. Beyond being highly recommended, Dawn of Ragnarok is an absolutely necessity for Assassin's Creed fans.

Dawn of Ragnarök is almost transformative for Assassin's Creed, teasing the possibility of what the series could become without the overt hand-holding that has defined it for almost two decades. However, after an intriguing opening, Dawn of Ragnarök falls back on old habits, and that feeling--coupled with how the expansion's narrative themes feel too similar to the base game--creates an experience that too often resembles something you've already had once before. But Dawn of Ragnarök is built on the bones of a great action-adventure RPG, and that carries much of the expansion, especially with the rewarding considerations introduced with the Hugr Rip. Only time will tell if Eivor and Havi's story continues beyond Dawn of Ragnarök, but if this is the end, it's a fine-enough conclusion to the relationship between the two.
