Total War è il seguito di Shogun- Total War del 2000. Come in Shogun, il gioco è diviso in due sezioni: la mappa della campagna a turni, in cui il giocatore deve prendere decisioni strategiche, reclutare e spostare eserciti, assediare insediamenti, combattere battaglie navali e impiegare agenti come emissari, spie e assassini per aiutare la diplomazia, offrire alleanze o tangenti o eseguire azioni più clandestine.
La religione è importante nel gioco e il fatto che una fazione sia musulmana, ortodossa o cristiana influisce sulle alleanze e sulla lealtà pubblica: come nazione cattolica, il giocatore deve eseguire i desideri dello Stato Pontificio, intraprendendo una guerra santa se necessario, altrimenti corre il rischio di essere scomunicato. Se l'ordine pubblico e la lealtà dovessero calare troppo in una particolare regione, potrebbe verificarsi una ribellione o una guerra civile - in queste situazioni il giocatore può decidere di schierarsi con i ribelli o con gli attuali governanti per sedare la ribellione o rovesciare un regime tirannico -.

Great simulator , very fun. Large scope , wonderful graphics. I have not had any bug problems which seem to have plagued many people. Great simulator , very fun. Large scope , wonderful graphics. Love that it is not run and gun but slow and deliberate tactics in gun battles.

Everything that was released after this became bloated, shined up and streamlined for the graphic whore children of today. The classic game board style, while not offering as many specific placements as the newer games, had a great design and Risk-like charm of its own that's sorely missing with all the newer mediocre games CA keep churning out. The AI was also superior to its sequels in the campaign map and with the XL mod, this game will last you for ages. If you have an older PC or video card, stick with this one.
