After the shocking ending of Gears of War 4, I was really excited to play this game and it did not disappoint. (But, I still miss Beast mode :( from Gears 3) It is not perfect, but The Coalition takes a few risks in the campaign with great results.New to the series is an open world. It is much smaller compared to other games, so it doesn’t feel overdone and fits the game nicely. I found it natural and cool to see landmarks along the way and hear Del or Kait say “let’s check this out,” leading to side quests. Landmarks don’t appear on your map until you pass by them, which rewards exploration. Another improvement to the series is the evolution of Jack. He can now aid in combat (and is playable in co-op) and can be upgraded with components. His abilities are game changing and will have you exploring every nook and cranny for components.An issue I have is the execution of the story feels off. The game basically contains 2 stories in one. The “Gears story” has you trying to get the HoD to function again, while Kait’s story continues from Gears 4. The “Gears story” can be redundant and some moments feel unnecessary, while I wished Kate’s story was slightly longer. Even worse, it fells disjointed as it seems to take turns telling each story. I will admit there are small details I missed, that I have noticed on a second playthrough. But, I feel Kait’s story should’ve been towards the end or the ending itself.This game has me excited to play the next entry in the series, yet again. Between the fun multiplayer, great campaign, and as a technical showcase, this game is a complete package.

Gears 5 is a superb shooter, and the only real survivor of the genre it popularized. The campaign is worth playing all on its own, but the developers have gone to great lengths by taking a chainsaw to the multiplayer and offering new and exciting ways to play.

Any Gears of War fan should definitely take Gears 5 for a spin if they really want to test the power of their new hardware but may feel somewhat let down by the campaign mode if they are huge fans of the initial trilogy.

The Coalition has gone all out to create one of the best Xbox Series X launch titles, which is both great and sad about the state of things. It’s no system seller like a Gears game should be, but it allows those who experienced it last year to marvel in its glory once more and introduce new players to the world of Sera in the most vibrant way possible.

Gears 5 is a big, loud blockbuster that brings so much to the table, it’s easy to under-appreciate it. By building on the stories set in motion by its predecessor, Gears 5’s narrative journey is a benchmark for the series so far with well-rounded characters that are far easier to love when compared to the original trilogy’s gruff, motley crew. Once you throw a polished, brutally competitive online facet, Horde’s best iteration, and the promising Escape into the mix, Gears 5 becomes a package too hard to refuse considering the clear value on offer. The story’s driving force might be “bound by blood” but Gears 5 is bound for greatness.

I also enjoy the ingenuity of the different types of guns, even though I usually just stuck with my trusty lancer and gnasher. Where it fell flat was that the game just got a bit.. boring - no massive 'omg' moments in it - it felt like it was still all the same enemies im mowing down from 2007.In fact when the game really started ramping up with actual stakes and a step up in gameplay along with a fun boss battle - the game came to surprising conclusion. Just as it was getting different and really good, it ended. A shame, but its still worth playing.

Gears 5 is an odd thing; it's neither a grand leap forwards, nor a complete rehash of what came before, and therefore sits somewhere in the middle of the two. On the whole, the improvements do outweigh the negatives (the non-linear approach to campaign levels and the small changes to horde mode being some of the most notable), and while The Coalition still has some work to do to really make the series its own, this is a far bolder and more varied approach the relatively safe Gears 4. If you love shooters and you want a good place to jump back into the series, this is perfect place to work the rust out of your lancer.

And Microsoft wonders why this series has been a laughing stock since gears 3 ended back in 2011 with judgement being the only exception so far because its multiplayer was fun.

I have no hesitation in naming Gears 5 on Xbox One as a triumph. The story is amazing, the multiplayer works perfectly, and Horde and Escape are the cherries on the cake.

Visually stunning when maxed out, Gears 5 for PC comes with a very solid campaign and lots of exciting multiplayer modes that will keep you entertained for a long, long time.

It's just another Gears game, but a more charismatic protagonist and a few experimental mechanics at least give the series a more firm footing going forward.

Gears 5 offers up an amazing campaign that isn't afraid to take risks, while staying true to its core. The new Escape mode is great, just like the additions to the iconic Horde mode. It's a shame the game suffers from many technical problems.

Gears 5 is a very solid chapter of one of the cornerstones of gaming in Xbox format: an episode that proudly reaffirms the vigorous soul of Lancer's armed fighters and the talent of a studio like The Coalition, stopping just a step away from absolute excellence.

Gears 5 survives on its solid cover shooting gameplay and a campaign that isn't afraid to pose difficult questions about problematic topics. But the largely stagnant Horde mode and general mess of an Escape mode really pull the sequel back from being a bold step forward.

Much like its iconic Lancer Assault Rifle, Gears 5 functions as perfectly as it was designed. The developers threw on a chainsaw of character, narrative, and content to make an over-the-top, thrilling experience from start to finish. Gears 5 is a badass game, and you'll come away feeling more badass than the legendary Marcus himself.
