To say that Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods – Part 2 is better than Part 1 in every way would be glossing over the strengths and weaknesses of both expansions. In some ways, TAG2 is the DLC I wished Doom Eternal had released much earlier; most of the new enemies, the platforming sections, and the Sentinel Hammer refreshed my interest in becoming engulfed by waves of demons Doom Eternal had prepared me to slay. In other times, I felt that TAG2 seemed shorter and more linear than TAG1, and was utterly disappointed by how quickly the game ended. Be prepared to have a helluva good time, but not for a bloody long time.

Well, it’s been an emotional ride from start to finish, and while DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods – Part One felt like a testing hill sprint to the top, The Ancient Gods – Part Two felt more like a fun whack-a-mole cooldown decline that the players deserve. Those who want to be tested until the very end may want to turn the difficulty up a notch for this one. Unless, of course, you’re already a relentless ultra nightmare DOOM-slaying beast.

This underwhelming finale to the rebooted Doom saga would be limp enough when judged on its own merits, but the fact that the developers went back and screwed around with what made The Ancient Gods, Part One work so well is criminal. This expansion is more Doom Eternal, which should be a good thing, but turns out to be the weakest and most disappointing that Doom Eternal has ever been.

It feels like they tried to dark souls this game. There is only one way to beat it, and instead of feeling like a bad*** slayer, they turn you into a little B****. Doom is about stomping demons, not playing a linear arena, and being forced to use certain guns with certain mods. You have to do that with multiple enemies on multiple stages. The combat loop was fun to begin with, but now they really tie you down. It is not that it is too hard, it just isn't worth it. I beat the main story on Nightmare and no sentinel armor. I didn't think it could get any worse/more annoying than a Baron with regenerating armor that can only be killed with a certain mod, but I was wrong. I quit this DLC after they introduce a cursed teleporter that slows you down, greens out your screen, takes away your dash ability, and can only be killed by a blood punch. All while hitting you with multiple enemies. NOT WORTH IT! To ID software: more is not better in this case. Doom 2016 is perfect, and Doom Eternal was a 9 out of 10. Please do not ruin your own games that I have been playing since Wolfenstein 3D.

DOOM Eternal The Ancient Gods Part Two is a great finale story-wise, but when it comes to gameplay it is rather disappointing. The few new enemies and mechanics feel shallow and the actual final boss fight is a flop compared to what we've gotten in Eternal and the previous installment of DOOM. So just like Doomguy, we'll patiently have to wait until we can get going again because there's an itch that needs scratching.

DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part Two on Xbox has made tweaks in all the right places to improve things for the concluding part of the DOOM Slayer saga. It’s by no means perfect, but the gameplay and tactics required makes it worth sticking around to finish the fight against evil.

Playing The Ancient Gods – Part Two is less frustrating and more enjoyable than conquering Part One, and feels like a more balanced experience besides. This is mainly due to the addition of a few interesting new enemies, which makes it all the more disappointing that fighting the Ultimate Antagonist, with whom the DLC and the game ends, isn’t really the final battle Doom Eternal deserves.

A very enjoyable campaign, I found it to be of about the same level of quality as the main game. The difficulty has been scaled back from the Ancient Gods Part One, which is appreciated as that campaign went a bit overboard in terms of challenge. The new enemy types offer some amount of variety to the encounters, though a few of them interrupted the flow of gameplay a bit too much, leading to frustration. The platforming sections are the strongest ones yet, and are legitimately quite fun. The final boss is pretty good, it's not exceptionally challenging and is a bit repetitive, but still works fairly well and is satisfying enough. I do wish the storytelling of Eternal was a bit more in line with 2016's, as the order of events and lore get a bit convoluted in the DLC. The elaborate cutscenes and somewhat intricate narrative are enjoyable certainly, but I found 2016's method of storytelling to be more fitting for the series.

In short, this is the most complete version of Doom Eternal and, aside from a terribly frustrating late-game boss fight, a consistently great note for Eternal to go out on.

Whoever decided to put vinyl toy collectibles in a Doom game was the one who sowed the seeds of destruction.

With forgettable levels and frustrating enemy additions, Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part 2 is an unworthy ending to this chapter in the Doom series' history. There were enough interesting story threads left to tie up to prove that refocusing on the story and Doomguy's identity was worth it, but the ultimate answers can't make up for a game that ends in a way so opposed to the franchise's core identity. Instead of ripping and tearing until it was done, Doomguy sat and waited for his ultimate foe to let him win.
