Commandanten, verzamel uw legers! CHECK vs. MATE roept om een interactieve plumeau, die het succesvolle schaakspelprincipe overhevelt naar de hedendaagse multimediawereld. Geanimeerde fantasiefiguren verzamelen zich in magische werelden en wachten op uw bevel! Voer als commandant vaardige manoeuvres uit op het speelbord en katapulteer jezelf direct in de strijd met verwoestende aanvallen, schaakman tegen schaakman.
Na een rechtszaak van Interplay Entertainment in 2012 over IP-inbreuk, "Battle Chess" tegen "Battle vs Chess", werden het spel en zijn DLC's/Editions omgedoopt tot Check vs. Mate en digitaal uitgebracht in Noord-Amerika.
Hoewel de inhoud hetzelfde is, kreeg het spel een tweede vermelding op Steam voor de nieuwe titel, omdat Battle vs Chess Steam-handelskaarten heeft die niet gekoppeld zijn aan de NA-titel.
Dit leidde er ook toe dat er verschillen waren tussen de online winkels voor de Steam-sleutels van het spel en de DLC/Editions, wat destijds voor problemen zorgde.

Check vs. Mate could have been very good if the developers hadn't been lazy with character animations, or if someone had taken the time to write a legitimate story.

Check vs. Mate is a good game to check out if you enjoy playing combat/strategic style games that make you think and leave you upset when the computer beats you.
